Hutsuls are almost unique ethnic group in Ukraine, and the most authentic mountain ethnographic group in Europe who for centuries have inhabited the Carpathian mountains, mainly in Ukraine (80%) and in the northern extremity of Romania (20% in the areas of Bukovina and Maramureş).
The first written information belongs to XIV century.
Along with Boikos and Lemkos Hutsuls are considered as indigenous population of the Carpathians. At present the population of Hutsuls is about 240,000 in Ukraine.
These photos were taken at Verhovyna in January 20014, and document the Christmas rites and rituals.
