Grief of the bushfires

Gary Rogers

I love our forests, I love the solitude and sharing it with our awesome wildlife, but this photo I shot in November symbolises how I am feeling - gutted and in pain, anger and grief with the enormous losses from these fires and the incredible suffering of those who could not escape. In the end there is none to blame but perhaps we as a species have not helped - fires have always been a way of life and death in Australia for thousands of years, and even in 1851 there was a similar day in Melbourne when temperatures hit 47degC and millions of hectares of western Victorian coastline was wiped out just like now. The difference now is that climate change is making these extreme events more frequent and more uncontrollable.
