Название реки Ай переводится с башкирского «светлая, красивая, как Луна» или «Лунная река» и полностью оправдывает свое имя: её берега окружены лесистыми холмами и высокими скалами, на которых встречаются рисунки древних людей. До постройки в этих местах железной дороги по Ай сплавляли железные караваны с продукцией южноуральских заводов.
