Петр Петрович жадно расспрашивал всех видавших Тянь-Шань своими глазами: каков он? Похож ли на Семиреченский Алатау?
Сторожевые казаки отвечали:
— Похож чуток, но поосанистее… Начальники дорожных пикетов говорили:
— Тянь-Шань — сплошная стена между землей и небом. Страшно смотреть на его высоту!
Русские переселенцы простодушно вздыхали:
— За каменными теми горами, чать, конец белому свету.
