This facility is located on Profitis Ilias Mountain on the island of Santorini and is part of a NATO military radar station. It was installed in the 1970s and stands only about 20 meters from the monastery — a cultural and religious landmark. Sources confirm that since 1999, the operation and transmission of the antennas were suspended by a decision of the Greek Ministry of Transport and Communications, although the station itself continued to function under the control of the Ministry of Defence. The radar belongs to a NATO missile launch base on Crete… monks and the Santorini municipality have been fighting the government for years, demanding its removal.
