Leptoglossus occidentalis can detect pheromones emitted by conifer cones from a distance, allowing it to locate its food sources with great precision. This keen chemosensory ability contributes to its success as an invader, even in new environments. In addition, it is able to survive harsh winters by taking refuge in human dwellings, sometimes in large numbers, without feeding. It is harmless to humans.
