Rascón grande de humedales dulces, elusivo y con patrones muy marcados en el plumaje. Raras veces llega a caminar en lo abierto a cualquier hora del día. No hay especies similares si se mira con atención. Note el pico y las piernas con colores brillantes y su plumaje moteado y barrado claramente de blanco.
