Пушистый дятел -птица, самый мелкий представитель семейства дятловых в Северной Америке длина 15—17 см.
Этого дятла называют пушистым из-за щетинок около носа (у других дятлов таких пушистых усов нет).
Характерная особенность вида — широкая белая продольная полоса из мягких пушистых перьев на спине, за что дятел приобрёл своё название; остальные перья спины чёрные.
